Judgement
There are three types of judgement mentioned in scripture.
- The Judgement seat of Christ, Rom. 14:10-12, and 2 Cor. 5:6-10. This is the judgement that lies for all believers who die before the Rapture (the return of the Lord for the church) and those who are taken up to be with the Lord at the time of the rapture, 1 Thess. 4:13-18. It is a judgement that decides rank, i.e. first, second, etc.
- The Judgement at the Great White Throne, Rev. 20:11-15. This is the judgement that awaits those who are saved during the period of Tribulation that follows the Rapture and those that are saved during the 1000 years following it, Vs. 7-10.
- In the first two cases it is a question of God judging man. The third type of judgement is man judging man. On the one hand we are told not to judge others as exemplified in Lk. 18. On the other hand we are told to test or judge the ‘spirits to see whether they are of God’, 1 Jn. 4:1. We are not to stand in judgement over the lifestyle or habits of another. We are to condemn the sin; not the sinner, as the Lord Jesus did, Jn. 8:1-11, and we are to be careful that we too, do not fall into the same sin, Mt. 7:1, Gal. 6:1.
Johns first letter is a study in how we are to recognise the true ‘spirit’ that lives in the life of a true believer. On occasions we meet the phrase ‘by this we know…’. Let’s have a look at each of them!
