Who said that Jesus was the Messiah ?

Jn. 5:30-47.

There are four witnesses to the fact that Jesus is the Messiah:

  • John the Baptist
  • The Father
  • Jesus miracles
  • The Scriptures.

1. Vs. 33. Who was John the Baptist?

· Jn. 1: 19-31. The forerunner for the Lord Jesus Christ, the one who could point to Him and proclaim ‘behold the Lamb of God…. Vs. 29.

· Mt. 3:1-12. The voice of one crying in the wilderness.

· Jn. 5:35. He was ‘a burning and shining lamp! (Mt. 5:16)

2. Vs. 37. The witness of John the Baptist is inextricably bound up with that of God the father. In Matthews account after he proclaims the message of who he is Jesus approaches for baptism. After he rises from the water God in heaven proclaims:

· Mt. 3:13-17. ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased’.

· Lk. 9:28-36. Again, God proclaims from heaven that Jesus is his Son, the Messiah.

· 2 Pet. 1:16-18. Peter confirms that the account given by Luke is true and accurate, without actually referring to him or maybe not even knowing that he had recorded it!

3. Vs. 36. Miracles, and there were lots! Jn.11:47.

  • Lk. 11:14-23, Mk. 3:22. Today in the 21st century men try to explain away the miracles and give alternative explanations as to what may have happened. However, the people who were there acknowledged that what the Lord did was in fact a miracle. They debated by what power they were done!
  • Jn. 6:1-17. The 5,000 + who were fed did not deny that they were fed miraculously, the followed Jesus looking for more! Jn. 6:26.
  • Jn. 2:1-11. The wedding guests didn’t deny that the water had changed into wine, they just enjoyed it!
  • Lk. 13:34. People refuse to believe, not because there is a lack of evidence but because there is a lack of will to believe. People simply refuse. In another context, 2 Pet. 3:5 they deliberately ignore the facts.

If you know the God of the Bible you will have no problem with the miracles of Jesus.

4. Vs. 39. The scriptures that Jesus referred to were the Old Testament.

The New is in the Old concealed, the Old is in the New revealed.

  • Is. 52-54.
  • 2 Tim. 3:15,16. Knowledge of the scriptures can lead you to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus. It is He who saves not the knowledge.

People refuse to believe, not because there is a lack of evidence but because there is a lack of will to believe.Jn.3:19 and 2 Thess. 2:12.
