Galatians Chapter 4
Vs. 1-7. We are born slaves to the law, [Eph. 2:12]. The only way out is for us to be adopted into another family, redeemed. The Holy Spirit is given to us as a guarantee.
Vs. 8-11. Identify ‘beings that are no gods’? How are we ‘known by God’?
The Galatians return to the law meant that they returned to the feast days of the OT. What are the ways that we return to the law? What can we do about it? How can we prevent it?
Vs. 12-20. In order to admonish them he ‘becomes as they are’, ie, one of them. He is not preaching at them as if they have rebelled against him personally. They previously had a very good relationship.
§ He had preached ‘Christ crucified’, 1:4.
§ They had begun well, they knew the difference between the past and the present, 3:3
§ They had experienced the Holy Spirit working among them, 3:5.
§ Consider the question, ‘how can you turn back? 4:9.
By speaking the truth was he in danger of becoming their enemy?
Speak the truth in love! Eph. 4:15.
Vs. 17. ‘They’ were making much of the Galations so that they might go back to the old ways of doing things, the feasts, ceremonies, processions etc. It is hard work being a pastor! He is puzzled.
Vs. 21-31. They actually wanted to be under the law! Why?
Children of Hagar vs. children of Sarah, promise.
The conflict between the two. That conflict goes on right up to today.
Do we have to ‘cast out the slave and her son’ today?!
Slaves versus sons.
§ We are not slaves but Sons. We are baptized into Him, 3:27. Implications of baptism?
§ The privilege of sonship can be enjoyed by all those who have faith.
§ Unity comes through Christ. Divisions come by the law.
§ We are Abraham’s seed, children of promise.
We are free from the law! But…!! Ch. 5:1. And Rom. 6 and 7.
