Galatians Chapter 3
Vs. 1-5. Answer the questions!
Vs. 6-9. The true sons of Abraham are people of faith.
10-14. Faith Vs. Law. If one law is broken then the whole law is broken, James 2:10.
Break one link in the chain and the chain is broken.
The just shall live by faith! The justified one will live as a result of his faith.
The promise of the Spirit? The spirit who was promised to us, Jn. 14:16.
15:18. Offspring = Descendent, ie Christ.
Promise to Abraham….450 years…..The Law given……Christ born.
The fact that the law was given does not annul the promise, the promise that the Messiah would come and bring Life. Life comes not by the Law but by Faith.
19,20. Then why the Law?
§ The law was introduced because of sin. They had to be shown where they were wrong.
§ To convince them of the necessity of a saviour.
§ It was designed as a schoolmaster to bring them to Christ, because it, the law, could never bring them to Salvation.
The ‘offspring’ = Christ. Jn. 1:11. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
21,22. Law Vs. Promise. If Life, ie freedom from the law could come by the law then there would be no need for the promise. But no. Ch. 5:1! Jn. 8:32, ..you will know the truth and the truth will make you free. 1 Pet. 2:16, Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; Live as servants of God.
23-29. Now we are all one in Christ, by faith! Previously the Law divided! The Jews from everyone else, slaves from masters and men from women.
On his second journey Paul preached in Galatia, Acts 16:6. He was delayed there as a result of illness, 4:13. He was received as a heavenly messanger,4:14. They lavished their love upon him, 4:15and a church was established as a result of preaching ‘Christ crucified’, 1:6, 3:1. 1Cor. 1:23, The Jews seek a sign, the Greeks seek wisdom but we preach Christ crucified.
2:16-19, Justification by faith alone.
2:20,21, Divine union by faith alone.
3:1-22, Sonship by faith alone.
23-Ch.4, Justification by faith alone leads to sanctification by faith.
Because the Galations had begun to accept ‘another gospel’, that involved again adhering to the Law Paul writes urgently to them to emphasise that it is all by
faith alone in Christ! Ch.6:11.
